Lulu Flores: A Front-Runner in the Democratic Primary for Texas House District 51
It’s an open seat election for Texas House District 51, and Lulu Flores is ready to grab it. As the current State Rep. Eddie Rodriguez seeks an election in Congress, seven candidates including Lulu are filing for the district’s Democratic primary.
The youngest of nine children, Lulu grew up in Laredo, Texas and later moved to Austin to pursue an education at The University of Texas at Austin for both undergraduate and law school. At the start of her career, Lulu spent eight years working with Irma Rangel, the first Mexican American woman elected to the Texas House of Representatives. Over the next 40 years, Lulu continued to dedicate her life to supporting women’s rights and having her hand in grassroots politics.
Today, Lulu still holds that fiery passion and is a front-runner for the Democratic primary, basing her campaign on supporting the rights of every Texan. “I’m running on having the respect of each and every Texan,” she said. Some issues that Lulu is campaigning on include the repeal of Senate Bill 8 and supporting women’s autonomy, the expansion of Medicaid, and funding for public education. Lulu has also received endorsements from many elected officials she has previously worked with, such as State Reps. Celia Israel and Donna Howard.
