‘It’s like McCarthyism…’ State Representative Lulu Flores Condemns Anti-LGBTQ Request from Attorney General

Tue 17 Jan, 2023 Firm News

Attorney General Paxton’s office requested the Texas Department of Public Safety compile a list of all Texans who have changed their gender on their driver’s license in the last two years.

Initially reported by the Washington Post in June, the Austin Chronicle reported the same in December.

Paxton’s office has not stated why the list has been requested.

Lulu Flores, newly elected Texas House Representative in District 51, is deeply troubled by the request, which poses privacy concerns and threatens basic civil rights for a specific demographic of Texans.

She tells the Austin Chronicle, “What, are we going back to the Stasi in Germany? We’re going to have people turning in their friends? Or even closer, it’s like McCarthyism. It doesn’t seem to be justifiable in any way, shape, or form. I want to know what [is Paxton] thinking, and how in the world could this ever be justified?”

According to the Austin Chronicle, the Attorney General’s office has denied that the request was made. Click here to read the article in full.
